The bible tells us “When a Man Finds a Wife He Finds A good Thing and Obtains Favor of The Lord”. Pastor Smith found his good thing and married a true woman of God, Corinea J. Davis, a native of Chicago Il on May 18, 1957. To this union was born one child, Minister Gerrie L. Shepard, they have also been blessed with a son-in-law, three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Pastor Smith accepted his call to the ministry and preached his first sermon on March 31, 1982 at Antioch Missionary Baptist Church. To further learn and grow in the vocation in which God had called him, he attended Moody Bible Institute and Chicago Baptist Institute and received biblical studies certificates at both institutions.
On December 18, 1982, the Lord called Pastor & Sister Smith to become Angels of the Zion Travelers Missionary Baptist Church located at 4959 Washington Part Court, Chicago, Il. Pastor Smith was ordained in January of 1983. After renovating the building on Washington Park Court, it was sold and worship service was held at the Chicago Baptist Institute for about two months. In the process of the Lord blessing Zion with a new church home, services were held in the lower level of Pastor & Evangelist Smith’s home for over 2 years. During this period, the Lord continued to bless spiritually, financially, and the church membership continued to grow.
In August of 1994, under the blessings of the Lord and the spiritual leadership of Pastor & Evangelist Smith, the members of Zion were able to motorcade to their new 1.2 million dollar church home at 14875 S. Wallace, South Holland, Il. Since that point in time the Lord continued to be faithful to his promises and the church has continued to prosper both spiritually and financially. Pastor Smith later retired from The Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) after being employed for 21 years.
As Pastor Smith listens to the voice of the Lord, he continues to be a builder of men and God’s Kingdom. In April of 2004 the Lord blessed Zion to open the doors to the Zion Buds of Promise Christian Academy, which is continually growing by the grace of God. The Lord has blessed Pastor Smith to enlarge Zion’s territory. In February 2014, our new educational facility was completed at the current church site. The Lord continues to place visions in his heart and spirit, for we believe that “Where there is no vision, the people perish”.
Pastor Smith is an energetic, astute visionary with a passion for God’s word and God’s people. He’s a father and a blessing to many. His favorite scripture is Psalm 34:1-3...”I Will Bless The Lord At All Times, And His Praises Shall Continually Be In My Mouth, My Soul Will Make A Boast In The Lord And The Humble Shall Hear Thereof And Be Glad..."O’ Magnify The Lord With Me And Let Us Exalt His Name Together”.
